Tanpura

A stringed instrument, like a sitar but with 5-6 strings and much easier to play.

These can come in various sizes and shapes for male and female vocalists and can also be used in unison with a sitar in a musical performance.

The name tanpura refers to the word taan which refers to the key notes used in classical music. This instrument supports the melody by filling the air with a beautiful and constant resonance.

Today we can also get electronic tanpuras to support our singing or musical performances, as well as electronic tablas.
